Measom Freer: A day in the life
DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY
“On an average day I’m up at about 6.30am. I need to have a cup of Earl Grey tea – that’s essential! Then I get the kids ready and off to school and make sure the rabbits have been fed and cared for. I go to work and the day begins. My main role is advertising and purchasing but as it’s a family business we do quite a number of different jobs. So, I can be writing pet editorial one minute and ordering machine parts the next.
“We’ve been working in this sector a long time and everyone in the company knows what they’re doing and we all support each other. We make all types of plastic packaging solutions, such as plastic bottles, bottle caps, dispensing caps, lids, scoops and measures.
“In the evening, when I’ve finished work, I spend a lot of time with the children and catch up with friends and family. I love reading and I’m in a book club. I also enjoy walking. Where we live is quite rural so there are plenty of nice long walks.”
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
“My role is varied, which I why I enjoy it. No two days are ever the same. I can be doing many different things throughout the day. I may be interviewing new staff or ordering parts or cleaning supplies and other essentials. I do a lot of admin as well, and look after advertising and purchasing. It comes down to keeping everything running smoothly.”
HOW DID YOU REACH YOUR CURRENT POSITION?
“Previously, I worked in the NHS for a number of years. After my children were born I wanted a change and more stable working hours. When a purchasing job came up at Measom Freer, I went for it and never looked back.”
WHAT ROLE DOES FAMILY PLAY IN THE COMPANY?
“We’re a family business and know this sector well. We started producing packaging in 1937 and plastic bottles from the 1960s. The company belonged to my husband’s grandparents so we’re the third generation. When you’re working in a family firm you live and breathe the business!
“On a day to day basis I work with my husband and my brother in law and sister in law. We have a bit of a laugh and will also crack on, share ideas and offer each other support. It’s good to have family members and trying to help each other out.”
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR MEASOM FREER?
“Within the next few months we will relaunch our ecommerce website. We’re in the process of making it more user friendly. The new updates will modernise the site and let us offer more support for our clients.
“Measom Freer’s 80th birthday also takes place in 2017. We’re looking forward to planning a big celebration to celebrate 80 years in the business. This will be an exciting time – we’ll be sharing more news with Pet Gazette as we plan the arrangements!”
Measom Freer has a minimum order of a single box so is happy to deal with smaller businesses and is able to accommodate requests of all sizes. The company provides an extensive range of packaging and is able to arrange label design.
