Pet insurers handled claims worth £2.2m a day in 2020
Data from ABI revealed pet insurers processed claims worth £799m during the pandemic, primarily to cover veterinary treatment
Insurance providers for pets handled claims worth around £2.2m a day in 2020, according to new data from the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Research from the trade body revealed pet insurers processed claims worth £799m during the pandemic, primarily to cover veterinary treatment.
This represents the highest figure for pet insurance claims since ABI began collecting data back in 2007.
Out of the 978,000 notified claims, 212,000 involving cats, 734,000 for dogs, totalling £148m and £598m respectively.
According to the data, the average claim amounted to £817, up 2% on 2019, across all policies for pets.
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for ABI, said: “During the pandemic, pets have given added comfort to their owners. But pet owners have also faced challenges, often worried about being able to access the full range of veterinary services during lockdowns.
“With claims worth over £2m handled every day, most involving medical treatments, pet insurers are continuing to do all they can to help their customers through very stressful and uncertain times.”
