Garden centre wants to expand with a horticultural holiday site

A Welsh garden centre is aiming to expand with horticultural themed holidays after supermakets have affected sales.

Tal Goed Nurseries, based near Glan Conwy, has seen its turnover fall since 2009 and blames low cost competition, in particular, supermarkets.

After over 25 years, the owners have decided to develop 27 luxury lodges in conjunction with the garden centre and cafe which already exist.

The Daily Post reported that in the planning statement, they said: โ€œIn order to address a declining financial viability and to inject value into the business, the proprietors have commissioned the production of plans to develop lodge accommodation on under-utilised land at Tal Goed.

โ€œThe intention is to further develop Tal Goed as a destination in its own right, offering a combination of leisure, leisure learning and more formal training and development provision on site that is ancillary to the current business.

โ€œThe lodge accommodation is also intended to address an identified need for quality accommodation that is complementary to tourist facilities in the wider Conwy area.โ€

โ€œTal Goed has faced damaging competition from large supermarkets and garden centres providing customers with low cost no-specialist services.

โ€œThe business has lost sales to such outlets.โ€
