Blue Cross extends offerings with new vet partnerships

Blue Cross is teaming up with three more vet practices to offer discounted treatment for pet owners on a low income.

From 1 February, ST Stead in York, Icknield Veterinary Group in Luton and Seymour Vets in Torbay will provide treatment and health check-ups on behalf of the charity for pets whose owners are on means-tested benefits.

Pet owners will be able to register one pet initially – including cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils.

There is an annual registration fee of £22 per pet which includes the cost of vaccinations, microchipping where needed (now compulsory by law for dogs and recommended for cats), a health check and pet care advice.

Treatment will also be provided on a contribution basis if the pet becomes sick or injured. Reduced cost preventative care, including neutering and flea and worm treatments is also available.

To be eligible for discounted vet treatment, pet owners need to receive one of the following means-tested benefits: Pension Credit; Housing Benefit; Income Support; Working Tax Credit; Council Tax Benefit (not 25% single person discount); Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Universal Credit and Income-based Employment and Support Allowance.

Richard Casey, Blue Cross clinical development manager, said: “We are very excited about extending our suite of Pet Care Clinics to new areas of the UK. The three new locations Luton, York and Torbay, join our current schemes in Derby and Cwmbran.

“We hope the new services reassure local pet owners on a low income that their pet can be treated if they become sick or are injured.”
