Pet shops whose licence is to be renewed may be granted an extension amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to Pet Industry Federation (PIF).

PIF’s Primary Authority partner, the Corporation of London, has received a response from DEFRA with regard to the extension of licences for businesses who operate under the Animal Activities Licensing regulations.

DEFRA said local authorities are under “considerable pressure” regarding licences and some may wish to extend licences as a result for three months to reduce the need for inspection and the risks involved whilst the outbreak continues.

The regulations allow local authorities to vary licences with the consent in writing (including e-mail) of the licence holder or where the licence holder makes an application.

PIF said: “Local authorities may wish to consider using this facility for extending licences for three months where this is deemed necessary. If your licence is coming up for renewal, please contact your local authority regarding the possibility of an extension.”
